The target fish was mackinaw that feed on "white fish". He was so successful trolling deep for the macs that he has been reordering. This pattern has been effective on mackinaw at Flaming Gorge WY. Anglers wanting an even longer fly will put a UV White tube fly or two in line ahead of the fly. Mountain Whitefish are on the mackinaw diet in Lake Tahoe CA and other cold water fisheries. This fly is similar to my other UV Pond Smelt patterns. It is tied with white fox fur with a few strands of holographic purple mylar. The fly really lights up in the water with an overlay of UV Angel Hair that is noticeable in the photo. Brett’s approach is to set up the rods out over deep water. Once everything is set, he will drive straight into the shore off to one side of the point. When he is over the contour line, at the depth the fish were showing on his graph, he will make a 90 degree turn to parallel the shore. Once past the “point” he makes another 90-degree turn heading away from the shore. This double hook-up came just after the boat headed away from the bank. The second 90-degree turn was regularly the most productive for the fish to commit. This same color scheme is common to many fish living in a weedy environment such as bass and walleye. This is my "Go To" trolling fly for large cutthroat trout in Pyramid Lake Nevada on sunny days. This minnow has an olive back, a black stripe down its side and a pearl/white belly. There is a bit of red flash to this fish throughout the year. During spawning season the sides turn bright red, hence the name.
