When I started my wholesale fly business in 1993, I purchased the book series “Flies for Trout”, “Flies for Steelhead” as well as “Flies for Bass & Panfish” and “Flies for Saltwater” to get color photos and recipes for the standard patterns in all categories. The only book I could not get from this series was this one. It was available used for $80.00 to $150.00 on the web. Six years ago, I contacted Bob Leeman in Maine who sold me a signed copy of the 2011 reprint he had produced. Unfortunately, Bob passed away in the summer of 2026. I was able to locate a limited stock of the 2011 soft cover reprint of this classic book that I now offer on my website.

This 120 page book is focused on fly trolling in the state of Maine. It covers the history of fly trolling and gets into the tactics & tackle. Most of the book focuses on the early fly patterns and the evolution of streamer flies based on the rainbow smelt baitfish of the northeast. There are 32 pages of color photos and recipes for flies as well as an additional 27 pages of fly descriptions. The flies presented were chosen for their practical fish catching qualities rather than just the historical significance.
