OCTOBER CUTTHROAT TROLLING, PYRAMID LAKE NV

October 1st Pyramid Lake NV reopens to trout fishing. During the month of October the water surface temperature drops from the 70’s down into the 60’s. At these temps the trout and their food will be in the 50’ to 70’ range. Sometime in November the surface temp will drop into the 50s. At this time the cutthroat will move to the upper water column and toward the shoreline shallows. They will remain shallow through the cold-water season. The past two Octobers I have fished Pyramid with Jason Lai and Cal Harris. We trolled “TANDEM ARCTIC FOX” flies and “SALTWATER SALMON TROLLING FLIES” with good success. The photos below will show some of the patterns we used and the fish we caught with them. On my Blog is an article I wrote about a Winter Fly Trolling on Pyramid Lake. Be sure you put Pyramid on your bucket list for big trout.

The fish above and the 16+ pound cutthroat below, were caught on a Green Salmon Series Tube Fly trolled behind a Wiggle Fin Action Disc #1. The down rigger was set at 60’. More photos and different flies down the page.

Below: Cal Harris with a number of cutthroats caught on the TANDEM ARCTIC FOX TROLLING FLY. Note the baitfish from the stomach of one of the trout, a pretty close imitation. The smaller baitfish are proof thast smaller flies can work also.

The fish below were caught on the Saaltwater “BUCKTAILING FLIES”. Green with a bit of UV has been a good color scheme.
