MINI TUBE Selection
A boxed 6 tube fly selection that includes 2/UV White, 2/UV Gray, 1/UV Pink and 1/UV Orange Tube Flies, 6 -#4 Octopus hooks red, 2 Wiggle Fin Action Discs and a 3.5” X 2” fly box.
These flies are 1.75” to 2.0” long. When wet the diameter compresses to .25” to .375”. These are an excellent minnow imitation and they have exceeded my expectations by a long shot! The original motivation was to make a durable substitute for a plastic hootchie for kokanee fishing. I started with pink, orange and chartreuse. I added white at the suggestion of a kokanee angler on Lake Stevens Washington. He had done well with my White Crystal Bullet. He got back to me with photos of good-sized fish and lots of them.
The next inspiration was to fish them as a juvenile pond smelt imitation on Lake Almanor CA. I had Bryan Roccucci (Big Daddy Guide Service) fish them and he came up with the two fly rig that has become a standard on the lake when the smelt are small. These flies have caught land locked salmon in Lake Oroville CA in white and in chartreuse.
The most surprising catch has been king salmon in the Puget Sound. Lake August 2022 Jon M has been trolling the Mini White Tube near Kingston at the top of Area 10. His biggest king was 15 pounds taken on a Mini Tube. There were schools of 2” herring and the salmon were selective to small lures. His comment with the photo was, “NO BAIT!”.
There is a common adage “Big Fish - Big Fly”. I now know that this is not always true. “ Find the food and you will find the predators” is more reliable. But it helps to match the size of the food. Yes, size does matter!
