LC-13 Shooting Head Kit
This kit includes 30’ of LC-13 lead core line, 4 leader loops, and instructions.
My recommendation for maximum depth is to put a loop on each end of the full length LC-13. If you want a shallow option, cut 3’ to 6’ off the LC-13 and add loops to the cut ends. This will give you a shallow and deeper option.
This is my fly rod down rigger trolling line: 100+ yards of braid backing, loop to loop connected to LC-13, followed by a leader of 10 to 30 feet. Down rigger clips do not hold braid well. The clips firmly grab the leader loop material. I attach the clip to the joint between the braid backing and the LC-13. The line from the surface to the clip is the thin braid backing which has minimal water resistance and does not overload a 5 or 6 weight fly rod. When a fish strikes, there will be slack to take up. Accelerating the boat is the quickest way to take up this slack.
When assembling this line, adding leader loops, use a hair dryer rather than a flame to reduce the “Heat Shrink Tubing”. A flame can damage and weaken the nylon braid of the leader loop. As tension is put on the leader loop, it grips the LC-13 tighter as more tension is applied. This is not the case if the entire leader loop is glued to the LC-13.
Additional Info
LC-13 is unique among lead-core lines in that it has a smooth plastic coating that will not abrade fly rod guides the way regular braided nylon lead-core will do. LC-13 is manufactured by the Cortland Line Company in Cortland New York. The name refers to the line weight of 13 grains per foot. For fly rod shooting heads you can measure the line length to determine the weight.
