Vampire Leech Trolling Flies (purchase)

Purple, Vampire Leech #4

$2.75

There is a seasonal progression of colors that the giant leeches in Eagle Lake undergo. In spring these leeches can be seen with a light brown/tan coloration. By summer they take on a dark (night crawler) brown and when the water is very cold in the late fall and winter, purple becomes the dominant color. I have dyed a lot of fly-tying materials. After heating the dye bath, the materials are rinsed in cold water to “set” the dye. When rinsing dark brown the rinse water will show quite a bit of purple as the dye is washed out. The point being that purple is a constituent part of the color brown. The progression from light brown to dark brown to purple is varying shades of the same color.

Purple is also the last color to be filtered out as light penetrates through the depths of a lake. Many deep lures are colored purple. This is a top choice for deep trolling.

The pair of #4 hooks are connected by a doubled 20# braid. The rear hook is attached by “loop to loop” connection that allows you to change out the rear hook if desired. The braid will accommodate a larger hook as well as a treble hook.

When trolled behind an Action Disc the fur lifts out and presents a larger profile. If you want a thinner look, skip the disc and fish it alone, with a small split shot ahead or troll behind a dodger. All of these will give a different presentation. Let the fish decide.
